Fact Sheet
What is INIS?
The International Nuclear Information System is a
decentralized information system co-ordinated by the International Atomic Energy
Agency in Vienna, Austria. It is the world's leading information system on
peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. INIS maintains a database
containing over 2 million bibliographic references and announces the
availability of scientific literature published worldwide on the peaceful uses
of nuclear energy. It also maintains a collection of full text non-conventional
(grey) literature that would be difficult to obtain elsewhere.
Contributors to INIS
103 countries and 19 international organizations
comprise the current INIS membership.
INIS subject scope
All aspects of the peaceful uses of nuclear science and
technology. There are central areas to the scope such as nuclear reactors,
reactor safety, nuclear fusion, applications of radiations and radioisotopes in
medicine, agriculture, industry and pest control as well as related fields such
as nuclear chemistry, nuclear physics and materials science. Special emphasis is
placed on the environmental, economic and health effects of nuclear energy.
Legal and social aspects associated with nuclear energy are also covered. And,
from 1992, the economic and environmental aspects of all non-nuclear energy
sources are included in the scope.
Availability to the public
Available in INIS Member States and co-operating International
Organizations. Please contact your INIS Liaison Officer or the IAEA for details.
Producers
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and

INSPEC - Physics
INSPEC - the Quality Database for Physics, Electronics and Computing
INSPEC is the leading English-language bibliographic information service
providing access to the world's scientific and technical literature in physics,
electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering,
computers and computing, and information technology.
INSPEC was formed in 1967, based on the Science Abstracts service which has been
provided by the Institution of Electrical Engineers since 1898. (A complete
history of Science Abstracts is provided on our centenary website). Though based
in the UK, its sales are worldwide with over 80 per cent exported. The INSPEC
database, which lies at the centre of this service, dates back to 1969 and has a
long-standing reputation for database quality.
INSPEC assists engineers, scientists and others in their research, to locate
relevant journal articles, conference papers and other documents. In addition,
the database may be used for:
Current Awareness
New Product Information
Technological Forecasting
Competitive Intelligence
Patent-Related Searching
Database Content
Over 3500 scientific and technical journals and some 1500 conference
proceedings, as well as numerous books, reports and dissertations are scanned
each year by INSPEC staff for relevant articles to abstract and index for
inclusion in the Database. The Database now contains over 6.8 million
bibliographic records and is growing at the rate of 350,000 records each year.
Copies of source documents are available from INSPEC's preferred Document
Delivery Service. If you are not familiar with bibliographic information
services, then this paper from the IEE Switzerland Symposium on the Data Highway
in October 1995 gives an introduction to INSPEC, with some recorded
demonstrations.
Subject Coverage
Although INSPEC provides a comprehensive index to the literature in physics,
electrical/electronic engineering, computing, control engineering and
information technology, it also has significant coverage in areas such as
materials science, oceanography, nuclear engineering, geophysics, biomedical
engineering and biophysics. The full scope of subject coverage is given in the
INSPEC Classification.
